If your cane is too long, you'll need to work harder to pick it up when walking and move it. If your cane is too short, you might lean to one side — which can throw you off balance.
It is less safe and it puts more stress on your body to use a cane that is not the proper length for your height (See Cane Sizing.) Most of us will decide on a cane based on factors like shape, color, floral patterns, fancy trim, etc., but remember the most important thing is the correct length for your height, no matter the shape, color or trim. Always select a cane that is correct for your height and then look for the elements that might make it more attractive.
